ASX stock codes.
Every company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange is given a short code, usually made up of three letters. This is called a stock code, or ticket symbol, and it used to identify the company when you buy or sell shares. Instead of typing out the full company name, investors and brokers use these short codes to make trading faster and clearer.
Stock codes are unique, so not two companies on the ASX will ever have the same one. Some codes are easy to guess because they are based on the company’s name. For example, CBA is the code for Commonwealth Bank of Australia and TLS is the code for Telstra. Other codes are less obvious, especially for smaller companies, but they all serve the same purpose. A quick identifier for the market.
When you use a broker platform, you usually type the stock code into the search bar to bring up the company’s share price and place an order. Codes are also used on financial news sites, charts and market tickers. They are the language of the market and help make sure everyone is talking about the same company without confusion.
In simple terms, stock codes are shorthand for companies on the ASX. They keep trading clear, simple, and efficient. Once you get familiar with them, you’ll start to recognise many of the major codes without a second thought.
