Stock code (Ticker)
A stock code (or ticker) is a short series of letters used to identify a company on the ASX.
Quick reference:
Format: Usually 3 letters (e.g. BHP, CBA, TLS). Purpose: Unique ID for each company.
Used in: Broker platforms, charts, market tickers. Benefit: Simple, avoids confusion with similar company names.
Expanded explanation:
Every company listed on the ASX is given a unique code. These are shorthand identifiers used by brokers and news outlets so that investors know exactly which company is being referred to. For example, “CBA” always means Commonwealth Bank, While “BHP” Specifically means the BHP Group. Codes make it faster and clearer to search for and trade shares. Even though company names can be long or similar, the code is always precise. Beginners quickly get used to recognising the big names on the ASX by their codes.
